Archaeological excavation during the construction of the Urban Center / redevelopment of the S. Simplicio area carried out by the Municipality of Olbia
Location:
Municipality of Olbia
Story:
The area of the square in front of the church of S. Simplicio corresponds to a portion of the Punic, Roman and Medieval necropolis of ancient Olbia, and therefore the earthworks necessary for the construction were preceded by a conspicuous archaeological excavation, built between October 2011 and April 2012 with the funds of the project under the supervision of the Superintendence for Archaeological Heritage for the Provinces of Sassari and Nuoro.
Details:
The portion of the excavation that is enhanced is the one that preserves the most significant evidence: the two wells of the Greek phase, tombs and structures of access to the sanctuary of the Roman phase, the lime kiln and the judicial tombs. The enhancement work is carried out by the Municipality with regional funds, created by the company GEDI with approval of the project and supervision of the Superintendence for Archaeological Heritage.
